Operating Units

Today the B-1B is operated by two Bomb Wings, the 7th based at Dyess AFB, Texas, and the 28th based at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota. The 100 aircraft built originally equipped four front-line Wings. Before 2003, sixty aircraft were "combat-coded" and twenty-seven were designated as "reconstitution aircraft". The latter were not funded for flying, or assigned crews, but they were rotated with the combat-coded aircraft and flown on a regular basis. But in 2003 the decision was taken to reduce the fleet to sixty aircraft, thirty-six of which would be combat-coded.

7th Bomb Wing

The 7th Wing moved from Carswell to Dyess on October 1st 1993, absorbing the 96th Bomb Wing. It operated B-1Bs and C-130s until April 1st 1997, when the C-130s transfered to AMC and the wing became the 7th Bomb Wing. In 2003 Detachment 1 of the USAF Weapons School and Detachment 2 of the 53rd Test and Evaluation Group at Ellsworth (responsible for training B-1 instructors and performing OT&E) moved to Dyess, thereby consolidating all B-1 aircrew training there. Assigned aircraft have a "DY" tailcode. The 13th Bomb Squadron was de-activated on June 3rd 2005.
